Week 20: 1. Officers Log

Already one week since we dropped anchor, wr're stuck! The close sailing to the wind has torn our sails and we don't have yarn... Ruddergear, tongues, liver oil, everything but no yarn. It's enough to drive you mad. We've sent out a pidgeon to report on our dismal situation and are hoping it'll return with yarn... Hopeless...

The last two days I lay in bed, running out of both ends. Two days of oat soup, that's enough to drop the toughest guy. There's little time to motivate the crew. I'm concerned for the captain. He's not used to sitting around doing nothing. His mood's dropping rapidly and he doesn't have much faith in pidgeons.  Who can blame the poor bastard? The last two pidgeons he's sent on similar missions have probably been eaten by the natives!

If that wasn't enough we're stuck in this dismal bay. Well, it could have been worse. could have happened out in the open ocean. Still, after a couple of natives tried to relief the captain of his money his drive has somewhat lessened. However, he valiantly swarted their attempt.

If the pidgeon doesn't get here soon I'm fearing for the worst! The complete decay of the crews morale and a burning of the ship.

Well, we had to expect problems with the age of the ship and all. Also the fact that we'd set too much sail wasn't doing it any good... But who can blame the old guy? It's much more fun going with a lot of sail.

Other than that we suffer from the availablity of food we'd consider "edible". Especially the meat, which the captain likes a lot, is aweful. Tough and cut by untrained hands. Only meat from the neighboring country to the eat can be considered edible. Still, it is border line. Aparently the neighbor country is rather selling the best pieces overseas. Because also there you only get good meat for horrendous sums of money.

Fisch is ok. Fruits, the little there are, are good. Vegetables are rudimentary. But as said, the captain likes to eat meat. It's killing him that he can't get good meat. Constantly he's trying again and again and still makes the same bad experience every time. As one of the great scientists once said (supposedly):

"The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and to expect different results".

I fear that he's almost had it...

We were also warned of the dogs. Yes, there are a lot of them. The most peaceful I ever saw. Only the sight of some car or bike tire is cause for some excitement. Other than that they while away the day sleeping in the sun or begging for food. Despite all the dogs around here the sidewalks are not nearly as full of sh... as the ones in the capital of the neighboring country. There's probably an orgen which makes the beasts so placid. The natives seem to have it too. Must have to do with the volcanoes, I guess.

If there was only something to see in this bay! Nothing! Absolutely Nothing!!! For one week we've been forced to spend our time on dirty beaches which are full of locals. Four days ago when I was swimming a brown piece of something floated past me. That really subdued my desire for a swim...

Also the Rum is gone... Well, it was Pisco, but why's the Pisco gone? Right, the disco party...

Should the pidgeon not arrive on Monday it's time to think about a Plan B...

End logbook entry.
