Day 153: Sucre, Mercado Central

Today we had a look around Sucre. First we wanted to drop off our laundry and Tobi wanted to drop some post cards at the local post office.

At the post office there were only 7 to 8 people in line at the counter. After about half an hour I took our laundry and walked to the cleaners around the corner. That way at least something would get done. After about an hour we both met at the Plaza 25 de Mayo. I'd gotten rid of the laundry and Tobi still had his post cards. He was told that he can't send post cards from Bolivia we should send them from Peru... That makes you speechless...

The central plaza is a stunner as in most South American cities. Loads of green with statues combined with street artists, beggars and people trying to sell you something.

Right next to it is the government building. Just to be clear, Sucre is the capital of Boliva, La Paz is only home of the government. Everybody here doesn't tire of telling you so :)

Because the museum "Casa de la Libertad" was still closed we had a look around Mercado Central, wow. Here you can get evreything! On the side where we entered the market were heaps of fruits. Neither in Argentina nor in Chile have I seen so much fruit!!! It's really hard to believe that Bolivia is the poorest country in South America.

After that was a row with meat on the left and poultry on the right. The smell needs some getting used to.

After that we looked for sugar and tee. Here you can get everything, you just have to know where :D
On the left are fish, eggs, cheese and on the right canned goods...

Right around the corner there were tons of cackes...

Fresh fruit juices in all combinations and flavors are also available.

On the second floor there were spices, vegetables, noodles and kitchens serving food.

Here we tried some local dishes. Tobi a "Picante", which is spicy chicken. I tried the sauce and it was really hot. I tried a sausage, which was a little bit dry but very tasty.

Afterwards we spent some more time on Plaza 25 de Mayo waiting for the museum to open. There we got an overview of South American history and the influence of Bolivian heroes. They had loads of portaits of their heroes.

Tomorrow we're hoping for better weather and some more impressions of the local architecture. On Sunday we'll visit the Carnival in Tarabuco.
