Day 78: Happy New Year 2018 to all of you!

What happened the last few days in Pucón?

On December 30. I went rafting on the Trancura river. What can I say? A picture, or better yet a video says more than a 1000 words :-)

Here's the link to my Cloud-Storage (Attention, the files are quite large!):

Because our guide didn't hit the line perfectly we went over a rock :-) Shortly we feared that the raft would capsize but nothing happened...

Then came the key part of the tour. Ahead of us some rafts had managed this part without fail. Luckily we weren't one of them :-D Otherwise this would have been rather boring...
I'm the guy sitting on the right side in the front... For a little while I'm even under the capsized boat. Then something funny happened. Someone yelled "Oli, aca!" and it's David. I'm staying together with him and his fiancé. He's in another agencies safety team today in a kayak. Their job is to help the "swimmers" :-) The second kayak entering the video is him. As this happened it felt like 20-30 seconds, but it were only 10...

The most dangerous part of the river we had to pass on foot. Some guides have had serious accidents on private trips there. Now it's prohibited by law to pass the rapids there in a boat. It's really great that they had a drone and thus I'm able to provide you with some excellent shots :-)

On the 31st, the most beautiful day of the week, I was able to get the last spot for a hike to the volcano Villarrica (2840m high). Here's the view from the balcony of the appartment.

At 6:30 a.m. we met at Sol y Nieve to pick up our gear. Because we'd have to walk over snow fields on the way up and down we needed light crampons and clothing to slide back down again. Also a gas mask with filters was included. The volcano is still active and spouts smoke. However, it only errupts every 30-50 years or so.

As I'm not yet in shape again I used a lift to cover the first 400m in height. That thing was from the dawn of lift building :-) It had no safety mechanisms whatsoever, wow, that was an early start for my adventure :-)

And because it's one of the few attractions in Pucón all 25, or 35, agencies offer tours. These are limited to 12 persons each but that's still a lot of people. I guess that's what it's like on Everst...

But the view was great :-)

After a little more than 3h we'd covered 1000m in height and were standing at the rim of the crater...

Fortunately we didn't really need the mask.

Down was much quicker, on our bums (Video: 3_Runter_vom_Vulkan.mp4) :-)

After the tour I was quite exhausted and went to bed for a couple of hours...
Just before midnight we went onto the roof of the building to watch the fire works. That was awesome. At the lake they had a hughe Party and the fire works was some 20 minutes long and really good :-) What a great start for the new year!

I hope you all had a great start as well.

A Happy New Year 2018 to all of you!
